46 Solar Installers Graduate from Dangote Academy

Dangote Cement Plc has trained and graduated 46 solar installers and entrepreneurs as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative to address Nigeria's energy demands and empower communities. The program — held at Dangote Academy in Kogi State — equips participants to drive growth in the renewable energy sector and support sustainable development nationwide.

Solar Installers to Drive Energy Transformation

Dangote Cement Plc has successfully trained and graduated 46 solar energy installers and entrepreneurs in a bold move to promote sustainable development and socio-economic empowerment in Nigeria. The program — part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative — aims to address the country’s growing energy demands while empowering local communities.

The graduation ceremony occurred at the prestigious Dangote Academy in Obajana, Kogi State. Speaking at the event, Azad Nawabuddin, the Plant Director of Dangote Cement Plc, emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative. Represented by Engr. John Gwong, Head of the Production Department, he described the training as a meal ticket and a rare opportunity for the participants. According to him, the new graduates are ready to "shake up the nation" by contributing significantly to Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.

The training aligns with the vision of Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote, who is deeply committed to youth empowerment and job creation. Nawabuddin highlighted that this initiative will not only create employment opportunities but also enhance electricity access in communities across Nigeria.

The program — conducted in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) — focused on equipping participants with practical skills in solar energy installation and entrepreneurship. Engr. Abdulrahman Shehu Wudilawa, Training Manager at ITF, described solar technology as one of the most lucrative sectors in Nigeria. He urged the graduates to maximize the knowledge they have gained to transform their lives and communities.

Bridging the Energy Gap in Nigeria

Mr. Wakeel Olayiwola, Head of Social Performance at Dangote Cement — represented by Mr. Olusegun Olojede — explained that the graduates would support government efforts to improve power supply across Nigeria. He added that the initiative reflects Dangote Cement’s commitment to sustainable development and its role as a leader in renewable energy.

General Manager of Community Affairs and Special Duties, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, underscored the importance of the program as a way of giving back to society. He revealed that out of the 46 beneficiaries, 27 were men and 19 were women, thus showcasing a balanced approach to gender inclusivity. Adeyemi also listed the beneficiary communities in Kogi State, which include Obajana, Oyo, Iwaa, and Apata.

Community leaders expressed their appreciation for the program. The Bajana of Obajana, HRH Idowu Isenibi, commended Aliko Dangote for his patriotism and vision. Representatives from other communities — including Apata, Iwaa, and Oyo — also lauded the initiative, describing it as a catalyst for positive change.

Solar Energy: A Pathway to Nigeria’s Future

Solar energy is becoming increasingly important in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its energy sources. With a growing population and rising energy demands, renewable energy offers a sustainable and cost-effective solution. Programs like this are crucial for developing a skilled workforce that can contribute to the nation’s energy transformation.

Dangote Cement’s investment in training solar installers underscores its commitment to long-term community development and environmental sustainability. As the graduates venture into their careers, their contributions are expected to play a significant role in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing energy access.

The graduates — now equipped with technical and entrepreneurial skills — are set to make a difference in their respective communities. This initiative highlights the power of public-private partnerships in addressing critical societal challenges. Through its CSR efforts, Dangote Cement Plc continues to set a benchmark for corporate responsibility in Nigeria.

The solar energy program is a shining example of how targeted empowerment initiatives can create a ripple effect of positive change. As the 46 new solar installers embark on their journeys, they are poised to drive Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy while inspiring others to embrace sustainable solutions.
