Energy Policy Divide Deepens in Australia Over Renewable Support
Queensland has withheld its support for a set of national energy market reforms intended to increase investment in renewable energy, leaving it as the only state not in agreement with federal and other state ministers. The reforms are aimed at supporting large-scale wind, solar, and battery storage projects, according to a report from RenewEconomy.
Details of Australia renewable energy policy Reforms
The proposed changes include an Energy Storage and Exchange Mechanism (ESEM). The ESEM is designed to function after the federal Capacity Investment Scheme concludes in 2027. All ministers, except for Queensland’s representative, agreed to move forward with developing legislation for the mechanism.
Also included in the package is a Market Making Obligation, which would provide greater long-term revenue certainty for utility-scale renewable projects. A third component involves new National Data Centre Expectations. These rules would require data centers to help offset their electricity consumption through investment in renewable energy and firming capacity.
Queensland’s Stance
Queensland’s Energy Minister, David Janetzki, has reportedly withheld support for the proposals since they were presented in December. The state has raised concerns about the economic viability of data centers operating under the proposed new rules, according to the report.
