Acciona SA, a Spanish civil infrastructure builder and concessionaire has secured a contract to build a 225-MWp solar plant in Peru for local power company Kallpa Generacion.
Solar Plant to Power 547,000 Homes and Cut 215,000 Tonnes of CO2
The new facility will feature 371,040 high-efficiency bifacial panels equipped with cutting-edge technology. It is projected to generate 611 GWh annually which is enough to power approximately 547,000 households each year while reducing CO2 emissions by 215,000 tonnes annually. Spanning 549 hectares, the solar plant will be integrated into the Peruvian power grid via the 220kV San José substation.
To support its goal of decarbonizing the planet and fostering jobs in renewable energy, ACCIONA will carry out this project through a turnkey "full EPC" (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract.
ACCIONA's Global Expertise in Large-Scale Solar Projects
The company boasts extensive international experience in developing large solar plants, both for itself and third parties with over 2,952 MW installed across nine countries. Notable projects include the construction of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park (Phase III) in Saih Al-Dahal, 50 kilometres south of Dubai, with a peak capacity of 1,054 MW; the 94 MWp Sishen plant in Cape Town, South Africa; and the 246 MWp El Romero Solar plant in Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the world’s largest, capable of powering 240,000 homes.
ACCIONA has extensive experience in the Peruvian infrastructure market, having been active since 1998. The company has completed significant projects, particularly in road construction, electricity transmission—where it is one of the largest operators in Latin America—and water management.
ACCIONA Expands in Peru with Key Infrastructure and Energy Projects
ACCIONA recently secured an agreement to acquire the high-voltage transmission line business in Peru from Darby International Capital, investing €220 million. This acquisition provides ACCIONA with a portfolio of over 1,200 kilometres of high-voltage power lines (ranging from 220 kV to 500 kV) and 30 substations across the country. It also includes the "Machupichu-Quencoro-Onocora-Tintaya" thirty-year concession project, which will enhance electricity transmission in southern Peru.
Additionally, the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines through the country’s Private Investment Promotion Agency (Proinversión) awarded a consortium led by ACCIONA three power transmission concession projects. These projects will involve over 400 kilometres of transmission lines, six new substations and the modernization of six existing ones with an estimated investment of US$337 million (€315 million). The projects will benefit more than one million people in the Ica and Arequipa regions and facilitate the development of over 10 GW of renewable energy in the area.
ACCIONA had previously won the concession contract to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain an electricity transmission network serving 1.3 million people across Reque and Nueva Carhuaquero, as well as Nueva Tumbes and Tumbes in northern Peru. The company was also awarded contracts for two power transmission lines benefiting 370,000 people between Ica and Poroma in southern Peru and Cáclic and Jaén in the north.
This year, ACCIONA completed the construction of the Pachacútec Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Ventanilla (Lima), as part of the third stage of the Pachacútec Macroproject's Drinking Water and Sewage System Expansion. It also carried out significant works on the Talara desalination plant in Piura, the La Chira wastewater treatment plant in Chorrillos (Lima) and the Arequipa wastewater treatment plant. Additionally, ACCIONA is responsible for water management for Lima’s Drinking Water and Sewage Service (Sedapal).
