Founder Group Limited has secured a $4.5 million engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract for a floating solar farm in Kuala Langat, Selangor. This project highlights the growing adoption of floating solar technology in Malaysia.
Expanding Floating Solar in Malaysia
Founder Group received a Letter of Award (LOA) for the construction of a 10-MWac/15-MWdc floating solar farm. The project spans 24 acres of water and aims to reduce land use while increasing energy output. The award, valued at MYR 20 million ($4.5 million), was granted by General Conditions Preliminaries & Consultation.
The company will act as a sub-contractor, providing labour, materials, hand tools and equipment. The floating solar project is expected to be commissioned by June 30, 2025.
Floating solar technology, also called floating photovoltaic (FPV), is gaining traction as a sustainable energy solution. It involves mounting solar panels on floating structures placed on water bodies. This approach helps conserve land while reducing water evaporation and improving panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of water.
Malaysia is investing in renewable energy to meet its carbon neutrality targets. Floating Solar aligns with these goals by offering an innovative alternative to traditional land-based solar farms.
Founder Group’s Role in the Project
Founder Group is a leading EPCC solutions provider for solar photovoltaic systems in Malaysia. The company specialises in large-scale solar projects and commercial and industrial (C&I) solar installations.
As a sub-contractor for the Kuala Langat project, Founder Group will handle essential aspects of construction, including logistics and on-site assembly. The company aims to deliver a high-efficiency solar farm that contributes to Malaysia’s renewable energy capacity.
Lee Seng Chi, CEO of Founder Group, expressed confidence in the project. He stated: “We are proud to be selected as a key subcontractor for this innovative floating solar farm project. We look forward to continuing our collaboration on this and future projects. We will support Malaysia’s renewable energy goals and promote a greener, more sustainable future.”
The Future of Floating Solar in Malaysia
Malaysia is advancing its renewable energy policies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The country has set a goal to achieve 31% renewable energy capacity by 2025. Floating solar plays a crucial role in this strategy.
The Kuala Langat project will support Malaysia’s transition to sustainable energy. The government encourages private sector involvement to accelerate renewable energy adoption. The success of this project could lead to more floating solar farms across the country.
Founder Group is expanding its footprint in Malaysia’s solar energy sector. The company went public in October 2024, raising $4.9 million to fund its renewable energy projects. The solar contract further strengthens its market position.
With expertise in large-scale and C&I solar installations, Founder Group is well-positioned to drive innovation in Malaysia’s solar industry. Its commitment to sustainability aligns with national and global climate goals. As Malaysia continues investing in renewable energy, floating solar will become a critical part of the energy mix. Founder Group’s success in this project could lead to more opportunities in the region.
With the commissioning of the Kuala Langat floating solar farm by mid-2025, Malaysia moves closer to its carbon neutrality targets. Founder Group’s expertise and commitment to sustainable energy solutions make it a key player in the country’s renewable energy future.
