Louisiana Public Service Commission Approves 3GW Solar Expansion for Entergy

Entergy Louisiana has received approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission to add up to three gigawatts of solar power to its generation portfolio. This decision marks the largest renewable power expansion in the history, significantly boosting Louisiana's commitment to economic and sustainable energy sources.

Entergy Louisiana's Commitment to Sustainable Energy

Entergy Louisiana, LLC operates as a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation, a Fortune 500 entity powering the lives of 3 million customers across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The company is committed to enhancing the reliability and resilience of the energy system while facilitating the transition to cleaner and more efficient energy solutions. With a century-long presence in local communities, Entergy is renowned for its sustainability efforts and corporate citizenship. Since 2018, it has annually contributed over $100 million in economic benefits through philanthropy, volunteerism, and advocacy. Headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, Entergy employs approximately 12,000 individuals.

Entergy Louisiana's Historic Expansion Approval

The authorization allows for a simplified procurement and approval process, facilitating the development of multiple solar projects in Louisiana. This initiative will not only create jobs and increase tax revenues for local communities but also position the state to attract new industries and employment opportunities prioritizing clean energy in their expansion strategies.

Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana, emphasized that this approval highlights their dedication to fulfilling operational and sustainability requirements while fostering economic growth and environmental conservation. He considers it a major achievement for the state's future and extends gratitude to all involved parties, including local officials and regulators, for their contributions to this proposal.

Entergy Solar Project Milestones

Entergy Louisiana has approximately 230 megawatts of renewable resources, including the Capital Region Solar facility, which was the first utility-scale solar project approved by the Louisiana Public Service Commission and began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. The Louisiana Public Service Commission also approved a solar filing consisting of approximately 225 MW of renewable projects, bringing the operating company’s total solar portfolio to over 3,800 MW in various stages of development and approval.

Entergy Corporation's Renewable Energy Goals

The approval signifies a major milestone in Entergy Louisiana’s continuing effort to modernize its power generation portfolio, providing cleaner, more efficient, and diverse energy solutions to meet the needs of its customers. This initiative aligns with Entergy Corporation’s plans for growing its renewable energy resources by 2031 and its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

There are both economic and environmental considerations for adopting renewable power. Solar energy, for example, offers numerous benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and job creation within the local community. Nearly 25% of Entergy Louisiana’s generation portfolio comes from carbon-free resources, including nuclear and renewable technologies.

Entergy Louisiana’s long-term vision includes further investments in clean energy infrastructure, especially utility-scale solar because it is becoming more economic. The company’s vision also includes further investments in energy efficiency programs and partnerships with local stakeholders to promote sustainability and resilience. With the 3GW capacity sought by Entergy Louisiana, it would bring its parent company, Entergy Corporation, closer to reaching its target to have between 15-17GW of installed capacity by the end of 2031.
