CEEC EPC Contract: 2 Amazing Solar Projects Transforming Azerbaijan

CEEC EPC Contract: First Major Project in Azerbaijan

The China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) has been awarded a major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) for its solar projects in Azerbaijan. The contract covers two significant solar power developments: a 230 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in the Garadagh region and a 1 GW solar PV complex in the Karabakh region. This marks CEEC’s first EPC contract in Azerbaijan.

Owned by Masdar, the 230 MW Garadagh Solar PV Plant is expected to supply approximately 500 million kWh of clean electricity annually. The project will offset an estimated 200,000 tons of carbon emissions each year and provide power to 110,000 households. This initiative is a key part of Azerbaijan’s commitment to strengthening its renewable energy capacity, which you can read more about in the context of Masdar and SOCAR’s green initiatives.

Masdar has also signed an EPC contract with CEEC for the 1 GW Karabakh Solar PV Complex. This ambitious project is set to generate about 1.5 billion kWh of clean electricity annually and help offset 600,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.

Masdar and CEEC: A Partnership for Regional Energy Expansion

This new contract builds on CEEC’s active involvement in several of Masdar’s other projects, including the 497 MW Fujeirah F3 independent power plant (IPP) and the 1.2 GW Al-Dhafra IPP. In 2022, CEEC also secured the EPC contract for a 2 GW solar PV plant in Uzbekistan, which included a 500 MWh battery energy storage system.

Beyond these collaborations, Masdar has signed several other agreements with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy. These include a 1 GW solar PV plant in the Alat region, a 1 GW onshore wind farm in the Absheron and Khizi regions, and a 2 GW offshore wind farm in the Khizi and Khachmaz regions, complete with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system.

Strategic Impact on Azerbaijan’s Energy Sector

The partnership between Masdar and CEEC represents a significant step toward reducing Azerbaijan’s carbon emissions and enhancing its energy security. Based in the United Arab Emirates, Masdar is a state-owned renewable energy company renowned for its leadership in the sector for over a decade, with established projects in more than 30 countries.

Masdar’s venture into Azerbaijan’s renewable energy market is part of a broader strategy to expand its global footprint. The partnership with CEEC is a milestone, establishing Masdar’s presence in the country and fortifying its position as a leading player in the global renewable energy sector.

These projects are expected to have a significant impact on Azerbaijan’s energy sector by reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to its environmental goals. The Garadagh and Karabakh solar PV plants are among the largest renewable energy projects in the region, and their successful implementation could pave the way for more green energy initiatives in Azerbaijan.

Masdar’s Expanding Global Renewable Energy Portfolio

Globally, Masdar is involved in various renewable energy projects. The company has signed agreements to develop a 10 GW renewable energy project in Uzbekistan, incorporating solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects. In Kazakhstan, Masdar has partnered with Samruk Kazyna, the country’s sovereign wealth fund, to develop 1 GW of solar and wind projects, with the potential to develop an additional 1 GW in the future.

Masdar’s partnership with CEEC is a crucial step toward achieving these goals, demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding its global presence and contributing to the global transition to renewable energy.
