The Mozambican government has approved a solar power plant in Chibuto district, Gaza province, with an investment of $110 million. This project will be executed by the Mozambican company SunMoz S.A.
Gaza solar power plant project overview
The power plant will generate 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity from a ground-mounted photovoltaic system, which will be connected to a substation via a 110-kilovolt overhead transmission line. The project is expected to begin construction in May 2024 and be completed in December 2025.
The Minister of Land, Environment, and Rural Development, Ivete Maibaze, highlighted the project’s significance in supporting the nation’s electrification goals. “The project is part of the government’s efforts to provide energy to all Mozambicans, particularly those in rural areas,” she said.
Economic and social impact of the Gaza solar power plant
The solar power plant is anticipated to significantly reduce Mozambique’s reliance on fossil fuels, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions. It will also create jobs during both the construction and operational phases of the project, contributing to local economic development.
The Chibuto solar project is part of a broader national strategy to diversify Mozambique’s energy mix. Other similar projects have been initiated in provinces such as Manica, Inhambane, Nampula, Tete, and Zambezia.
Other solar initiatives related to the Gaza solar power plant
The government announced in September that a solar power plant in Metoro, Cabo Delgado province, is projected to save the country $4 million annually in energy procurement costs. This plant, with a capacity of 41 megawatts, is expected to generate 69-gigawatt hours of electricity each year.
The Metoro solar plant, developed by Independent Power Producer EleQtra, is part of the government’s efforts to attract private investment and promote renewable energy. This plant, along with other projects, will help Mozambique reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy security.
Challenges and opportunities for the Gaza solar power plant
While Mozambique’s renewable energy sector is growing, it faces challenges such as inadequate grid infrastructure and limited financing. However, the government’s commitment to renewable energy, combined with international support, offers significant opportunities for future development.
The Chibuto solar power plant is expected to play a crucial role in Mozambique’s renewable energy landscape. By contributing to the national grid and supporting rural electrification, the project will help the country meet its energy needs sustainably.
The Chibuto solar power plant marks a significant step forward in Mozambique’s renewable energy journey. With the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster economic growth, this project is poised to make a lasting impact on the country’s energy sector.
