In a significant move towards a greener and healthier future, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major partnership to deploy four million solar electric cookstoves to households across the country. This ambitious initiative aims to combat the pressing issues of indoor air pollution, deforestation, and gender inequality, marking a pivotal step in the nation’s sustainable development journey.
A Landmark Agreement for Nigeria solar cookstoves Impact
The government has formalized this commitment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Clean Sustainable Renewable Solutions Limited (CSR Solutions). This collaboration falls under the Green Economy Empowerment 774 (GEE774) programme, a strategic effort to drive environmental and economic progress at the grassroots level.
The agreement, signed on behalf of the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, outlines a comprehensive distribution plan. To ensure equitable coverage, approximately 5,000 ECOCA solar electric cookstove units will be allocated to each of the nation’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Health Benefits: A staggering 95,000 deaths are recorded annually in Nigeria due to illnesses linked to indoor air pollution from cooking with firewood and charcoal. This initiative directly targets this health crisis, with women and children set to be the primary beneficiaries of cleaner air within their homes.
Environmental Protection: Each solar cookstove is projected to offset about 4.5 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. This will substantially contribute to Nigeria’s climate action goals, including its commitment to the Paris Agreement and its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Furthermore, by reducing reliance on firewood, the program will play a crucial role in curbing deforestation.
Social and Economic Empowerment: In many communities, women and girls spend countless hours collecting firewood. The introduction of solar cookstoves will free up this valuable time, creating new opportunities for education, entrepreneurship, and greater participation in the economy. The ECOCA cookstoves are also equipped with practical features, including three LED lights for evening activities and two USB charging points for small electronic devices.

To ensure the project’s long-term success, the distribution will begin with a pilot phase. Over the next six months, the solar cookstoves will be introduced in selected states to test their durability and performance across Nigeria’s diverse climates. This initial phase will prioritize regions with the highest rates of indoor air pollution and deforestation.
