Qatar has launched the 800 MW Al Kharsaah solar power plant, a landmark project that significantly expands its solar capacity and accelerates its energy transition. This initiative is a cornerstone of Qatar’s strategy to reach 5 GW of solar capacity and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Al Kharsaah Project: Qatar’s Solar Power Expansion
With the official inauguration of the Al Kharsaah solar power plant, Qatar marks a major milestone in its energy transition. Located west of Doha, the 800 MW solar project is a significant addition to the country’s existing 1.675 GW of solar capacity. The launch was led by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
The Al Kharsaah plant is a key component of Qatar’s strategy to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. The Al Kharsaah solar power plant is a public-private partnership between QatarEnergy, France’s TotalEnergies, and Japan’s Marubeni Corporation. Spanning 10 square kilometers, the plant features more than 2 million photovoltaic (PV) panels.
Al Kharsaah’s Role in Qatar’s Energy Mix
