Nigeria Partners with Firm to Roll Out 4 Million Solar Cookstoves
In a landmark move to advance public health, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major partnership to distribute four million solar electric cookstoves to households across the nation. This ambitious initiative represents a significant step towards transitioning millions of Nigerians away from harmful traditional cooking methods like firewood and charcoal.
The government formalized the agreement by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Clean Sustainable Renewable Solutions Limited (CSR Solutions). This collaboration is a cornerstone of the Green Economy Empowerment 774 (GEE774) programme, a strategic effort to bring sustainable solutions to every corner of the country.
A Nationwide Rollout Strategy for Solar cookstoves Nigeria
The scale of the project is unprecedented. The plan outlines the distribution of four million ECOCA solar electric cookstove units, ensuring comprehensive coverage by allocating 5,000 units to each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
To guarantee the project’s success and the technology’s suitability, the rollout will begin with pilot projects in selected states. This initial six-month phase will allow for testing the durability and performance of the cookstoves in Nigeria’s diverse climates before the full nationwide distribution commences. The MoU was signed on behalf of the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, by Permanent Secretary Nko Asanye Esuabana, underscoring the ministry’s central role in this empowerment initiative.
More Than Just a Solar cookstove Nigeria
The ECOCA solar electric cookstove is designed as a multi-functional hub for modern, off-grid living. Beyond providing a clean and safe cooking solution, each unit comes equipped with:
- Three LED lights for household illumination.
- Two USB charging points for mobile phones and other small devices.
- Two stainless steel pots.
- An integrated monitoring system to track carbon offsets.
This last feature is crucial, as it allows for the quantification of the project’s environmental impact and opens the door for monetizing these climate efforts through carbon incentives.

Improving Public Health: The reliance on firewood and charcoal for cooking contributes to severe indoor air pollution, which is responsible for an estimated 95,000 deaths annually in Nigeria, with women and children being the most affected. By introducing clean cooking technology, this programme aims to drastically reduce these preventable fatalities.
Protecting the Environment: Each solar cookstove is projected to offset approximately 4.5 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. This will significantly contribute to Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Furthermore, by reducing the demand for firewood, the initiative will play a vital role in curbing deforestation.
Empowering Women and Girls: The daily burden of collecting fuel often falls on women and girls, consuming valuable time that could be spent on education, income-generating activities, or community engagement. By providing a reliable and time-saving energy source, the project aims to unlock new opportunities for female empowerment and economic independence.
