Turkey solar capacity Reaches 21 GW: An Extraordinary Renewable Success

Turkey solar capacity surge: A bright future for renewables

Turkey has made remarkable strides in its solar energy production, with installed capacity reaching an impressive 21,007 megawatts (MW) by the end of the third quarter of 2024. This marks a substantial 15% increase compared to the previous year, showcasing the nation’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure. As reported by PVKnowhow, Turkey’s solar capacity is projected to further increase to 21.6 gigawatts by March 2025, as part of a broader initiative to boost the country’s renewable energy capacity to 85.9 gigawatts.

Ambitious renewable energy goals driving Turkey solar capacity growth

This growth is part of Turkey’s ambitious renewable energy goals, which aim to diversify its energy sources and increase the share of renewables in its electricity generation mix. The country’s efforts align with global trends, as seen in other regions. For instance, in the United States, SolarBank Corporation is actively developing several solar projects, such as a 2.9 MW solar project in Gainesville, Florida, and larger projects in New York, including the 7.2 MW Glor Rd Project and the 4.584 MW Forest Hill Rd Project. These projects highlight the global momentum towards sustainable energy solutions.

Global solar energy developments and Turkey solar capacity expansion

Turkey’s advancements are part of a larger global push towards renewable energy. In Hungary, Enlight’s 60-MW PV Plant has started operation, contributing to the country’s goal of having 21% of its electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030. Similarly, Belgium has unveiled a €40 million solar carport, the world’s largest wooden solar structure, which adds a significant 40 MW capacity to its green energy portfolio.

These global initiatives underscore the importance of solar energy in the fight against climate change and the transition to sustainable energy sources. As countries like Turkey continue to scale up their solar capacities, the world moves closer to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
