Two Rivers to Expand Solar Capacity from 1.2MW to 3.2MW

Two Rivers Power Company is expanding its solar capacity from 1.2 MW to 3.2 MW through a partnership with Distributed Power Africa-Kenya. This will create East Africa’s largest rooftop solar installation for residential and commercial use.

A Major Boost for Renewable Energy in East Africa

Two Rivers Power Company has entered a strategic partnership to more than double its solar capacity, increasing output from 1.2 megawatts (MW) to 3.2 MW. The deal, signed with Distributed Power Africa-Kenya (DPA-K), will create the largest rooftop solar installation for residential and commercial use in East Africa.

The agreement strengthens Two Rivers Power Company’s position as a key renewable energy provider within Nairobi’s Two Rivers complex. The firm operates under the Two Rivers International Finance and Innovation Centre (TRIFIC) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Centum Real Estate (Centum Re) — both subsidiaries of Centum Investment Company PLC — listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

The expansion is part of a broader commitment by Centum Re and TRIFIC SEZ to promote clean, affordable, and reliable energy infrastructure. The Two Rivers complex — a premier mixed-use development — will benefit from enhanced energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.

“This development enhances Centum Re’s green credentials as a large-scale real estate developer and ensures clean, reliable power supply for Two Rivers residents,” said Kenneth Mbae, Managing Director of Centum Re.

The move aligns with Kenya’s increasing adoption of solar power. The country enjoys ample year-round sunshine, which makes it ideal for both small-scale and large-scale solar projects. The expanded solar capacity will support commercial tenants and residents while reducing dependence on grid electricity.

Key Infrastructure and Energy Strategy

Two Rivers Power Company holds a power generation and distribution license. It operates a high-voltage line from Ruaraka to its substation at the Two Rivers Mall, where the existing 1.2 MW solar plant is located. The new expansion will bring total capacity to 3.2 MW.

TRIFIC SEZ — which houses various businesses — will benefit from lower electricity costs and improved sustainability. “This is an important value addition for businesses setting up within the TRIFIC SEZ. It lowers the cost of power and reduces the carbon footprint, which is becoming an imperative for businesses as the world looks to operate more sustainably,” said Brenda Mbathi, CEO of TRIFIC.

The project reflects a broader trend of private sector investments in renewable energy infrastructure across Africa. Companies are increasingly adopting solar power to manage energy costs, ensure reliability, and meet sustainability targets.

Distributed Power Africa-Kenya’s Role in the Project

Distributed Power Africa-Kenya (DPA-K) — a subsidiary of global energy firm EDF — specialises in renewable energy solutions. The company provides businesses and industries with clean energy options without requiring upfront investment, thereby eliminating technical and operational risks.

“Harnessing the African sun and space creates the greatest opportunity for the continent’s energy transition. Rooftops and empty grounds now become a powerhouse, enabling you to begin saving, securing your energy supply at a predictable price, and focusing on your core business,” said Anthony Mburu, CEO of DPA-K.

The collaboration will enable businesses and residents within the Two Rivers complex to access reliable solar power at a competitive cost. It also strengthens Kenya’s position as a leader in clean energy adoption within Africa.

Impact of Increased Solar Capacity on the Two Rivers Complex

The Two Rivers complex is one of Nairobi’s largest mixed-use developments, featuring a shopping mall, office spaces, and residential units. The additional solar capacity will enhance energy security while setting a benchmark for sustainable urban development in the region.

This project supports Kenya’s national renewable energy goals and global efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The increased use of solar energy at Two Rivers is expected to inspire similar investments in other commercial and residential developments.

The success of this initiative highlights the potential of public-private partnerships in advancing clean energy solutions. As businesses worldwide seek sustainable alternatives, projects like this reinforce the economic and environmental benefits of solar capacity expansion. With this development, Two Rivers Power Company is set to become a model for future urban energy solutions, combining innovation, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.
