WASCO Launches Solar-Powered Water Treatment Facility

In a significant move to enhance climate resilience and water security, the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) has commissioned a state-of-the-art, solar-powered water treatment facility in the community of Des Barras, Babonneau. This critical infrastructure project more than doubles the daily water supply capacity for the area, increasing it from 10,000 to 25,000 gallons and directly benefiting over 300 local residents.

Strategic Vision: WASCO Launches Solar-Powered Water Treatment Facility

The project is a result of a robust collaboration between the Government of Saint Lucia and WASCO, with vital financing provided by the European Union (EU). This funding was facilitated through key regional bodies, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the OECS Commission, underscoring a united effort to bolster the nation’s climate readiness.

Engineered to combat the vulnerabilities of rural water systems, the upgraded plant is designed to minimize service interruptions caused by extreme weather events. Its enhanced treatment and storage capabilities will ensure a more reliable water supply during periods of heavy rains, high turbidity, and drought conditions.

Renewable Technology at the Forefront

At the heart of the Des Barras plant is a compact, modern water treatment system powered by an integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) system. By leveraging renewable energy, WASCO is not only reducing its operational costs and carbon footprint but also advancing Saint Lucia’s national goals for environmental sustainability.

At the official handover ceremony, WASCO CEO Zilta George-Leslie emphasized the project’s significance. “This upgraded plant, powered by renewable energy, will provide clean drinking water to over 300 residents of Des Barras,” she remarked. “It not only improves water security but also aligns with Saint Lucia’s climate resilience goals.”

The ceremony, attended by officials from the Government of Saint Lucia, the EU, CCCCC, and the OECS Commission, marked the official transfer of the facility’s management to WASCO. The project serves as a pioneering model for sustainable infrastructure, setting a new standard for future developments across the island and the broader Caribbean region.
