In a significant move towards decarbonization, the Czech Republic’s largest steelmaker, Třinecké Železárny, has commissioned a new rooftop solar installation, marking a tangible step in its comprehensive green energy strategy. This project is complemented by a pioneering power purchase agreement, collectively advancing the company’s goals of energy independence and reduced emissions.
On-Site Generation Powers Steel Operations
In early March 2025, the company activated new rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems on the social building of its rolling mill. Comprising 224 solar panels, the installation has a capacity of 98.56 kWp. According to company announcements, all the electricity generated by this system will be consumed directly on-site, providing clean energy for the mill’s operations and reducing its reliance on the grid.
A Broader Strategy: Securing Off-Site Solar Power
This on-site project is part of a much larger, dual-pronged approach to securing renewable energy. Třinecké Železárny also entered into a landmark off-site Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with ČEZ ESCO, the first of its kind for the energy provider. Under the three-year contract, the steelmaker will procure 4.4 GWh of clean electricity annually from the Vrskmaň solar power plant. This strategic partnership ensures a stable supply of green energy and is expected to yield several million crowns in annual savings.
Driving Toward 2030 Decarbonization Goals
These initiatives are central to the steelmaker’s ambitious environmental targets. Company leadership has confirmed that sourcing electricity from photovoltaic plants is a key component of its strategy to slash emissions by 55 percent by the year 2030. By integrating both on-site generation and off-site contracts, Třinecké Železárny is creating a robust framework for sustainable energy consumption.
The Future is Green Steel
The commitment extends beyond current projects. Třinecké Železárny is actively pursuing further investments in modernization and green technology, including additional PV developments, biomass utilization, and a new gas turbine plant. This multifaceted investment roadmap underscores a clear industry trend: leveraging renewable energy to ensure energy security and pioneer the production of green steel. By actively building its renewable energy portfolio, the company is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable industrial practices for a carbon-neutral future.
