New Zealand solar generation Reaches 128 MW: An Extraordinary Milestone
New Zealand’s solar energy sector has achieved a significant new benchmark, with instantaneous power generation hitting a national record of 128 MW. This peak performance was recorded at 2 PM on Thursday, March 6, 2025, according to official data from the Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko, signaling a new era for photovoltaic power in the country’s energy mix.
While this milestone represents a monumental step, the authority noted that for the week of March 2-8, 2025, the mean daytime solar generation averaged 69 MW. This record-breaking output underscores the growing momentum behind solar, even as it highlights the vast potential for further expansion. The achievement is a direct result of strategic investments and large-scale project developments aimed at diversifying New Zealand’s renewable energy portfolio.
Driving this expansion are key industry players like Lodestone Energy, which is significantly boosting the nation’s solar capacity. The company has been instrumental with its development of two large-scale solar farms on the North Island, projected to supply 84 GWh of clean energy annually—enough to power around 11,700 homes. Furthermore, Lodestone is advancing its ambitious plans for an even larger 220 MW photovoltaic project in the South Island, designed to complement the country’s extensive hydroelectric systems.
The national trend towards utility-scale solar is also being accelerated by major energy corporations. In a notable move, Genesis Energy recently acquired the 114 MW Edgecumbe Solar project from Helios Energy. This strategic acquisition is part of a growing pipeline of solar developments critical for New Zealand to achieve its long-term decarbonization goals.
The record 128 MW peak is more than just a number; it is a clear indicator of solar energy’s increasing contribution to New Zealand’s sustainable future. As these pioneering projects come online and new ones are developed, the country reinforces its position as a global leader in renewable energy innovation and application.
