A 10-megawatt solar power project has been launched in Afghanistan’s Laghman province, aiming to provide the region with 24-hour electricity. The project, funded by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat and a private company, is expected to be completed within 14 months.
The Laghman Solar Project: Details and Goals
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy and Water, the initiative is located in the Syed Ahmad Khil area of Qarghayi district. Estimated to cost around 8.5 million US dollars, it aims to deliver uninterrupted power to local residents.
According to TOLO News, the ministry emphasized that the project will substantially boost the local power supply. Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the national power utility, is financing the construction in partnership with a private company.
Improving Laghman’s Power Supply
Laghman province currently faces significant electricity shortages, particularly during peak times. This new solar project is designed to address these challenges by alleviating the frequent power outages that have long troubled the region.
Local officials have praised the initiative for its potential to advance the province’s development. Amanudin Mansoor, head of the Laghman electricity department, confirmed the project’s scope: “The project will provide 10 megawatts of electricity, helping to ensure a 24-hour power supply to Laghman province.”
Echoing this sentiment, Laghman’s governor, Mawlawi Mohammad Rezaq Nabi, stressed its importance for the local economy. “The solar power project will help meet the growing energy needs of the province,” Nabi remarked, adding that it will benefit both residential and commercial sectors and help foster regional economic growth.
The Role of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS)
Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) is taking a leading role in the project’s development, overseeing its construction and ensuring timely completion. Officials have noted that this initiative is part of a broader DABS strategy to improve Afghanistan’s power infrastructure.
DABS is actively investing in energy projects nationwide, from hydropower to solar initiatives. The Laghman solar project is one of several designed to strengthen the country’s energy production, reflecting the company’s commitment to its development timelines.
By generating power locally, the project is also expected to reduce Afghanistan’s dependence on imported electricity, potentially saving millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on imports from neighboring countries.
Afghanistan’s Wider Renewable Energy Strategy
The Afghan government is focusing on renewable energy to address the nation’s chronic power shortages. With Afghanistan’s abundant sunlight, solar power is a key solution, and the Laghman project is part of a comprehensive plan to expand its use across the country.
Beyond this initiative, the government is planning several other solar projects in various provinces. Together, these efforts are expected to add hundreds of megawatts to the national grid and help meet the growing demand for electricity.
The government’s focus on renewable energy underscores its commitment to sustainable development. By investing in solar power, Afghanistan is moving toward a cleaner, more dependable energy future.
The 10-megawatt solar project in Laghman province marks a significant step in Afghanistan’s broader energy strategy. Backed by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat and a private partner, the initiative is poised not only to deliver 24-hour electricity to the region but also to strengthen the national power grid and reduce reliance on imported energy.
