Botswana Oman solar project: Stunning 500MW Deal Signed

Botswana and Oman Partner to Develop 500MW Solar Project in Maun

In a major leap forward for Southern Africa’s energy transition, Botswana and Oman have officially launched a landmark 500-megawatt (MW) solar power project in Maun. The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by the heads of state from both nations, solidifies a strategic bilateral partnership and kicks off what is set to be Botswana’s largest renewable energy venture to date.

The ambitious project, situated in northwestern Botswana, pairs the 500 MW photovoltaic (PV) array with a substantial 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This critical integration will allow for the storage of solar power generated during the day to be dispatched during evening peak hours, ensuring a more reliable and consistent power supply. The Omani company Naqaa Sustainable Energy was selected as the preferred Independent Power Producer (IPP) by Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy. Through its local subsidiary, Okavango Solar, Naqaa will manage the project’s design, financing, construction, and operation under a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Botswana Power Corporation.

A Cornerstone of Botswana’s National Strategy for Renewable Energy

This development is a cornerstone of Botswana’s national strategy to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The Maun plant represents a decisive move to diversify the country’s energy mix and economy, reducing its long-standing reliance on fossil fuels and diamonds. By leveraging its vast solar potential, Botswana is taking a significant step toward greater energy independence and sustainable economic growth.

First Step in a Larger Energy Agreement Between Botswana and Oman

The Maun facility is the inaugural project under a much larger 3 GW framework agreement established between Oman and Botswana in late 2025. This long-term commitment outlines a phased rollout of renewable capacity intended to strengthen and stabilize the national grid. Formalized after high-level talks between Botswana’s President and Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, the partnership underscores a deepening of diplomatic and economic ties that extend beyond energy into sectors like mining and oil. With an expected operational lifespan of at least 25 years, this project heralds a new era of clean energy for the region.
