In a major advancement toward its 2038 zero-carbon target, The University of Manchester has finalized a landmark agreement to source a significant portion of its energy from renewable sources. Through a partnership with UK clean energy firm Enviromena, the university will offtake power from a new solar installation, securing up to 65% of its total electricity demand for the next decade.

The deal centers on the Medebridge Solar Farm in Medebridge, Essex, a new facility developed by Enviromena. Spanning 175 acres of low-grade agricultural land—an area equivalent to 70 football pitches—the site will feature 104,000 state-of-the-art solar panels. Construction began in April 2024, with the solar project scheduled to be energized and begin powering the campus by autumn 2025. Beyond generating clean energy, the project is designed with ecological benefits in mind, incorporating plans to enhance biodiversity through improved hedgerows and the planting of native grassland and wildflower meadows.
Under the terms of a 10-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (cPPA), the university has committed to purchasing 80% of the solar farm’s annual generation. This move is projected to slash the institution’s carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, an impact comparable to powering 21,000 homes. Lee Barlow, the university’s Finance & Administration Manager and Project Lead, highlighted the significance of the agreement, which was finalized after nearly three years of complex negotiations. “We are pleased to announce this historic deal, which strengthens our commitment to sustainability while providing the best value to our students and stakeholders in the form of supply stability and pricing certainty,” he stated, acknowledging the procurement process navigated challenges like the 2022 energy crisis and geopolitical instability.
A key driver for the university was ensuring the deal added new renewable capacity to the national grid. Carly McLachlan, Professor of Climate and Energy Policy, emphasized this point: “For us, the key factor in building this connection was that our promise would increase the amount of renewable energy available to the UK electricity grid.” This long-term commitment was instrumental in bringing the new development to fruition, a collaborative success achieved with support from energy broker Inspired PLC and legal counsel from Eversheds Sutherland.

Enviromena, which manages a portfolio of over 300MW and is developing further clean energy projects exceeding 3GW, praised the partnership. Lee Adams, Chief Commercial Officer, remarked that the collaboration “signifies a shared dedication to embracing cutting-edge technologies for a sustainable energy future.” CEO Chris Marsh added that beyond reducing the university’s carbon footprint, the Medebridge site will positively impact the local ecosystem throughout its operational life into the mid-2060s.
This solar power agreement is the latest in a series of proactive environmental measures by the university, which is celebrating its bicentennial year. Guided by its core value of social responsibility, the institution divested from coal, oil, and gas in 2022, subsequently reducing the carbon intensity of its investment portfolio by 37% and reinforcing its unwavering commitment to a sustainable future.
