Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and Indonesia’s state-owned Pertamina have significantly deepened their collaboration, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to spearhead new renewable energy ventures across Indonesia. The agreement, formalized during the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, marks a pivotal step in supporting Indonesia’s ambitious energy transition and its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

Expanding a Strategic Alliance: Masdar and Pertamina Partner for Renewable Energy in Indonesia

The MoU specifically targets the joint development of cutting-edge projects in solar PV, wind, and green hydrogen. This partnership builds upon a pre-existing relationship that includes investments in geothermal energy, demonstrating a long-term commitment from the United Arab Emirates to Indonesia’s clean energy future. The signing ceremony was witnessed by high-ranking officials, including H.E. Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, underscoring the strategic importance of the collaboration.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, emphasized the role of such partnerships in accelerating the global energy transition. He affirmed Masdar’s dedication to Indonesia’s sustainable development, stating that the planned initiatives will be instrumental in helping the nation meet its clean energy objectives. Echoing this sentiment, Pertamina NRE CEO John Anis highlighted the collaboration’s potential to combat climate change and fortify the bilateral ties between the UAE and Indonesia.

Building on the Success of the Cirata Project: Masdar and Pertamina Partner for Renewable Energy in Indonesia

Cirata Floating Solar Photovoltaic project

This new agreement is anchored by the success of the landmark Cirata Floating Solar Photovoltaic Plant, Masdar’s inaugural project in Southeast Asia. The 192 MWp facility, installed on the Cirata Reservoir in West Java, already provides clean power to 50,000 homes and displaces approximately 214,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

The partners are already planning for the future, with a Joint Development Study Agreement in place with PLN Nusantara Power for a second phase that could add up to 500 MW of capacity. This expansion is bolstered by recent Indonesian regulatory changes that now permit up to 20% of a reservoir’s surface area to be used for renewable energy projects, paving the way for further growth.

Tapping into Indonesia’s Green Potential: Masdar and Pertamina Partner for Renewable Energy in Indonesia

Floating photovoltaic system installations are particularly advantageous for island nations like Indonesia where land is at a premium. These systems not only maximize energy generation by utilizing vast water bodies but also benefit from the cooling effect of the water, which enhances panel efficiency. Furthermore, they help conserve water by reducing evaporation.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), a large-scale shift to green energy could unlock enormous economic and environmental benefits for Indonesia, with potential annual savings exceeding $51.7 billion. The strengthened partnership between Masdar and Pertamina is a critical enabler of this transition, positioning Indonesia as a regional leader in the renewable energy sector and solidifying the economic and technological ties between the two nations.
