Uganda Receives Funding for Solar Irrigation
Uganda has reportedly secured Shs710 billion for a solar irrigation expansion project, a significant financial package aimed at enhancing the country’s agricultural capabilities. However, specific details regarding the funding terms and its allocation are not confirmed by the current sources.
The financing is associated with the Results-Based Financing (RBF) program, which is implemented by Equity Bank Uganda in collaboration with Energising Development (EnDev) Uganda and GIZ. This initiative leverages targeted incentives for solar technology suppliers to make renewable energy systems more affordable for small and medium-sized enterprises involved in agriculture.
A successful example of this program can be seen in a tree nursery in Lira, which has utilized the support to enhance its solar irrigation efforts. The nursery has already reported plans to expand further by adding more solar irrigation systems and security lighting.

Future Developments in Solar Irrigation
The prevalent financing model is expected to increase the accessibility of solar irrigation technology, thereby enhancing crop yields and ensuring the resilience of farming operations in Uganda. As local agribusinesses take advantage of the funding and resources available, the impacts could lead to a strengthening of the agricultural sector in the country.
