Proposed Investment in Uruguay Solar Project
Spanish energy company Solaria has proposed an investment of up to $5.7 billion in Uruguay, aimed at developing a large photovoltaic generation complex and data center parks within the country’s free-zone regime. The project will span three regions: Canelones, Florida, and San José.
Power Capacity and Agreements for Uruguay Solar Project
The planned capacity of the project is approximately 850 MW, distributed as follows: 200 MW in Canelones, 350 MW in Florida, and 300 MW in San José. The proposal also includes a 20-year power-purchase agreement with Uruguay’s state utility, UTE.
Business Model and Employment Impact of Uruguay Solar Project
Solaria intends to develop the renewable energy and data center infrastructures, which will be provided as turnkey facilities for international technology and cloud service operators. The project is expected to create over 3,000 construction jobs and approximately 100 to 150 permanent maintenance positions.
Regional Significance of the Uruguay Solar Project
If successful, the proposal could position Uruguay as a regional hub for renewable-powered cloud infrastructure, although it remains an investment plan at this stage with no finalized commitments.
