AEPC’s Historical Impact on Renewable Energy Access
Nepal’s Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) has successfully expanded renewable energy access to more than 3.7 million households over the past three decades. The organization’s initiatives have included various renewable-energy programs aimed at improving energy access in rural areas.
Government’s Vision for Future Investments in Renewable Energy Access
At AEPC’s 30th-anniversary event, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, the Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, called for the organization to transition beyond subsidy-based projects. He emphasized the importance of attracting private investment and integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar power, micro-hydropower, biogas, and biomass, with sectors like agriculture, industry, and tourism.
Decentralized Energy Systems for Enhanced Renewable Energy Access
Shrestha also pointed to decentralized energy systems as a means to enhance climate resilience, especially against extreme weather events like floods and heavy rainfall. He instructed AEPC to assist local governments in reducing their dependence on liquefied petroleum gas, which could bolster energy security and promote sustainable local development.
Challenges Ahead for Renewable Energy Access
The call for more private-sector involvement signals a significant shift in strategy as Nepal seeks to harness its renewable energy potential. Moving forward, AEPC faces challenges in securing investment and ensuring equitable access to renewable energy solutions across the diverse geographic landscape of Nepal.
Conclusion on Renewable Energy Access Initiatives
AEPC’s accomplishments over 30 years have positioned the organization as a vital player in Nepal’s renewable energy landscape, but the upcoming initiatives will require strategic partnerships and innovative solutions to meet future energy demands.
