Greece Renewable Energy Capacity Growth in 2026
Greece added approximately 2.7 GW of renewable energy capacity during the first nine months of 2026, according to local industry reporting. This increased the total installed renewable capacity to about 19.9 GW by the end of September, up from roughly 17.2 GW at the end of 2025.
Greece Renewable Energy Dominance of Solar Energy
Solar energy accounted for nearly 78% of the new capacity, reinforcing Greece’s concentration in photovoltaics. Developers are expected to add another 500 MW by year-end, potentially bringing 2026’s total additions to 3.2 GW, setting a new record.
Greece Renewable Energy Challenges in Energy Management
The rapid growth has led to system-management challenges, with renewable energy curtailments reaching 2,063 GWh in the first nine months. Additionally, the installed battery-storage capacity stood at approximately 700 MW. Despite the strong deployment momentum, the growth in renewable energy has not yet resulted in lower energy costs for Greek households and industry.
Greece Renewable Energy Context of Energy Costs
Greece currently ranks last among 24 EU countries in terms of energy cost competitiveness for manufacturing. Studies indicate that the increase in renewable capacity has not translated into reduced energy expenses for businesses and consumers.
Greece Renewable Energy Future Outlook
As renewable energy installations continue to rise, Greece’s energy sector is facing scrutiny over its pricing structures and overall effectiveness in delivering cost savings to households and industries.
