Ahold Delhaize Signs Renewable Energy Agreement with Rezolv Energy
Ahold Delhaize and Rezolv Energy signed a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) to secure 370 GWh of renewable electricity annually. This agreement involves two Romanian energy projects: the 1.3 GWp Dama Solar photovoltaic park in Arad County and the 300 MW Dunărea East wind farm in Constanța County.
The VPPA will cover approximately 3.7 TWh over its duration. Ahold Delhaize will contract about 14% of the combined output from these projects, receiving associated Guarantees of Origin.
Commercial operations for both projects are expected to commence in 2029. Since this is a VPPA, the renewable electricity generated will enter Romania’s grid rather than being delivered directly to Ahold Delhaize stores. The company will benefit financially from the contract and obtain renewable energy certificates.
This agreement is among the largest corporate renewable-energy agreements in Southeastern Europe and one of the first in Romania that combines solar and wind generation. The projects are anticipated to produce approximately 2,580 GWh annually, which represents nearly 5% of Romania’s total electricity consumption in 2025.
Project Details of the Renewable Energy Agreement
The Dama Solar project, with a capacity of 1.3 GWp, and the Dunărea East wind farm, rated at 300 MW, are key components of Ahold Delhaize’s strategy to enhance its sustainability practices.
According to sources, the agreement reflects a significant commitment to renewable energy as Ahold Delhaize aims to lower its carbon footprint through partnerships that promote clean energy production.
Regional Impact of the Renewable Energy Agreement
As Romania seeks to increase its share of renewable energy in the grid, agreements like this VPPA are crucial. The collaboration between Ahold Delhaize and Rezolv Energy aligns with broader goals to enhance energy security and sustainability in the region.
Future Developments in the Renewable Energy Agreement
Following the execution of this agreement, both companies will focus on ensuring the smooth development of the associated projects. Continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure will contribute to Romania’s energy transition goals.
