In a significant step for Colombia’s energy transition, Enel Colombia, through its renewable energy arm Enel Green Power, has commenced commercial operations at two major solar facilities in the country’s northern region. The La Loma and Fundación solar plants, with a combined capacity of 240 MWac, are now feeding clean energy into the national grid after completing all regulatory and technical evaluations.
This 240 MWac milestone is a key part of a broader expansion that saw Enel’s total operational solar capacity in the country approach 700 MWac by the end of 2024, positioning the company to supply over 30% of Colombia’s total solar generation.
Enel Green Power Launches 240 MWac Solar Plants in Colombia: La Loma
Located in the department of Cesar, the La Loma solar project stands as the nation’s largest centrally dispatched solar farm to date. Inaugurated in February 2024, it boasts an effective net capacity of 150 MWac. Spanning an impressive 387 hectares, the facility is equipped with approximately 400,000 bifacial panels mounted on trackers to optimize energy capture. Its annual generation is estimated at 420 GWh, sufficient to meet the energy needs of about 600,000 people—a population comparable to the city of Bucaramanga. The project’s construction phase was a significant source of local employment, creating 1,720 jobs, with 77% of positions filled by residents from the surrounding area.
Fundación Park Adds 90 MWac as Enel Green Power Launches 240 MWac Solar Plants in Colombia
Complementing La Loma is the 90 MWac Fundación Solar Park in Pivijay, Magdalena. This plant, which began commercial operations in August 2023, utilizes more than 244,000 high-efficiency bifacial panels across a 237-hectare site. The project, which represents an estimated investment of $109 million, was one of 11 contracts awarded during a government energy auction in 2021. It is projected to supply 267 GWh of clean energy to the country annually.
Driving Colombia’s National Renewable Goals after Enel Green Power Launches 240 MWac Solar Plants in Colombia
The launch of these two plants contributes to a remarkable year for solar energy in Colombia, which added a total of 1.6 GW of solar capacity in 2024, driven by a favorable decline in the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Together with the existing El Paso facility and the massive Guayepo I & II complex, Enel’s solar portfolio underscores its commitment to diversifying the nation’s energy matrix. The company continues to expand its footprint with additional projects under construction, including Guayepo III (200 MWac) and Atlántico (199.5 MWac), further solidifying northern Colombia as a major hub for renewable power generation.
