A new partnership between HSBC Vietnam and Malaysia-based Leader Energy Holding Berhad is set to bolster Vietnam’s renewable energy sector. HSBC has committed a seven-year green financing facility of approximately $23.32 million (VND 593 billion) to the energy firm. The funds will be used to refinance the Vinh Hao 6 (VH6) solar power plant, a key asset Leader Energy acquired in 2023 as it expands its clean energy portfolio in the country.

The focal point of this financing is the VH6 facility, a 50MW commercial solar power plant located in Binh Thuan province. Operational since 2019, the plant generates around 83,000 MWh of electricity annually, which is supplied to the national grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with EVN. This output significantly contributes to Vietnam’s climate objectives by displacing an estimated 75,131 tons of CO2 emissions each year, supporting the nation’s pledge made at COP26 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Strategic Expansion Following HSBC Loans $23M to Leader Energy for Vietnam Solar Project Development

This refinancing marks a strategic milestone for Leader Energy, which aims to grow its renewable energy asset base in Vietnam to over 500MW. Jenny Ng, Group Chief Financial Officer of Leader Energy, commented on the deal, highlighting the “trust and confidence” that financial partners like HSBC have in the company’s performance and fiscal management. For this transaction, HSBC Vietnam served as both the lender and the mandated lead arranger, demonstrating a strong commitment to the project’s long-term success.

Fostering ASEAN Connectivity After HSBC Loans $23M to Leader Energy for Vietnam Solar Project Development

The deal underscores the power of international collaboration in driving sustainable development. Ahmed Yeganeh, Country Head of Wholesale Banking at HSBC Vietnam, emphasized the critical role financial institutions play in advancing the green transition. He noted that the collaboration between HSBC’s Vietnam and Malaysia offices “exemplifies the power of ASEAN connectivity” in facilitating major sustainable initiatives. This partnership not only provides affordable and reliable clean energy but also creates local economic opportunities and serves as a replicable model for sustainable development across Southeast Asia.
