Led by AMEA Power and local partners, the Doornhoek Solar Project is set to generate approximately 325 GWh of clean energy annually—enough to supply approximately 97,000 households and offset 330,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. The project was awarded under Bid Window 6 of the REIPPPP.
The $120 Million Solar Project
AMEA Power, a rapidly expanding renewable energy firm in the Middle East, has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with South African utility Eskom for the 120MW Doornhoek Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project.
According to enterprise news, the project was secured through Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP), a significant deal that marks AMEA Power’s strategic entry into South Africa’s vast and rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
AMEA Power holds the majority stake in the $120 million Solar PV Project and is collaborating with Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Consulting—both fully owned by African women. Standard Bank South Africa will provide debt funding, while the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) will supply equity funding for the local partners.
Generating Over 325 GWh of Clean Energy Annually
The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed on April 30, 2024, by His Excellency Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy; Segomoco M. Scheppers, Eskom Group Executive for Transmission; and Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power. The signing highlights a collective commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in South Africa.
Also present at the signing ceremony were His Excellency Mahash Saeed Alhameli, the UAE Ambassador to South Africa; Sibongile Mduli, CEO of Ziyanda Energy; and Lusani Madali, Managing Director of Dzimuzwo Energy.

Located near Klerksdorp in the North West province, the project is set to produce over 325 GWh of clean energy annually, supplying approximately 97,000 households and offsetting 330,000 tonnes of carbon emissions once complete. This initiative aligns with South Africa’s goal of having renewable energy constitute 22% of its energy mix by 2030.
Commitment to South Africa’s Green Energy Goals
Demonstrating its commitment to the South African market, AMEA Power opened a Johannesburg office last year. This location serves as the company’s regional hub for overseeing AMEA Power’s operations in Southern Africa.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, highlighted the project’s significance, noting that becoming one of the first preferred bidders from Bid Window 6 is a major achievement for the company. He added that the project underscores AMEA Power’s dedication to environmental sustainability and socio-economic progress.
“The Doornhoek Solar Project will be essential to the shift to sustainable energy sources as part of South Africa’s long-term plan to lower carbon emissions and improve energy security. Being among the first selected bidders from Bid Window 6 to reach this significant milestone makes us proud,” Hussain stated.
The Doornhoek Solar Project marks a significant step toward South Africa’s goals for reduced carbon emissions and greater energy stability. With leadership from AMEA Power and support from local partners and key financial institutions, the initiative is poised to make a substantial impact. This landmark agreement reinforces the company’s commitment to driving positive environmental change and fostering socio-economic development in South Africa.
