Dubai-based AMEA Power is set to make a significant impact on South Africa’s renewable energy landscape with its 120-megawatt (MW) Doornhoek Solar Project. After being awarded the project under Bid Window 6 of the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), the company has now reached financial close and solidified its commitment with a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with state utility Eskom.
A Landmark $120 Million Investment
Representing a total investment of $120 million, the Solar PV Project is strategically located near Klerksdorp in the North West province. The financial structure is backed by Standard Bank South Africa, which is providing debt funding, and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), which is supplying equity funding for local partners. This collaborative financial backing underscores the project’s viability and importance.
AMEA Power holds the majority stake in the consortium, which notably includes partners Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Consulting, both of which are fully owned by African women. This partnership structure highlights a commitment to local and inclusive economic development alongside green energy goals. According to reports on the deal, this marks a strategic entry for AMEA Power into South Africa’s burgeoning renewables sector.

Powering Homes and Reducing Emissions
Once operational, the Doornhoek Solar Photovoltaic (PV) facility is expected to generate approximately 325 GWh of clean electricity annually. This output will be sufficient to power around 97,000 South African households while displacing an estimated 330,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. This initiative directly supports South Africa’s ambitious goal of achieving a 22% renewable energy share in its national mix by 2030.
The PPA was officially signed on April 30, 2024, in a ceremony attended by key dignitaries, including South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, His Excellency Gwede Mantashe, and AMEA Power’s Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais. “Being among the first selected bidders from Bid Window 6 to reach this significant milestone makes us proud,” stated Al Nowais, emphasizing the project’s role in bolstering energy security and promoting sustainable development.
Strategic Commitment to Southern Africa
To support its growing portfolio in the region, AMEA Power established a regional hub in Johannesburg last year. The Doornhoek project is a cornerstone of this expansion strategy. With financial close achieved and agreements in place, the project is on track to commence commercial operations by December 2025, marking a tangible step forward in South Africa’s clean energy transition.
