Argentina’s renewable energy sector has marked a new milestone with the official authorization of a 15 MW solar park developed by MSU Green Energy. Under Resolution 122/2024, issued on July 2, 2024, Energy Secretary Eduardo RodrÃguez Chirillo formally approved the facility’s entry into the nation’s wholesale electricity market (MEM), paving the way for its commercial operation.
The new solar farm is strategically located in Ingeniero Juárez, within the Matacos department of Formosa province. Occupying a 30-hectare site, the facility features an array of 25,800 advanced solar panels. It will connect to the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI) via the 33 kV Medium Voltage Line Ingeniero Juárez – Chiriguanos, which is managed by the local utility Recursos y EnergÃa Formosa (REFSA).
With its 15 MW installed capacity, the park is projected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 11,000 local households. The project is also set to make a significant environmental contribution, with estimates suggesting it will prevent around 17,400 tons of CO2 emissions annually, reinforcing Argentina’s commitment to decarbonization.
Power Purchase Agreements and Market Conditions After Argentina Approves MSU Green Energy’s 15 MW Solar Park
The electricity generated by the Ingeniero Juárez park will be sold to the Wholesale Electricity Market Administration Company (CAMMESA) under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) at a fixed rate of $0.076 per kWh. The government’s authorization also specifies that MSU Green Energy will be responsible for any additional costs incurred by other MEM agents or penalties imposed on transport providers due to availability issues stemming from the new plant.
MSU’s Expanding Renewable Portfolio
This project is part of a broader expansion strategy for MSU Green Energy. In a separate agreement announced in February 2024, the company signed a 10-year PPA with Volkswagen Group Argentina to supply renewable energy from its Las Lomas and Pampa del Infierno solar parks to the automaker’s Pacheco Industrial Center. Furthermore, MSU Green Energy has outlined a long-term vision that includes a $350 million investment to develop eight additional solar parks, aiming to add another 400 MW of renewable capacity to its portfolio.
