Bahrain and German Embassy Launch Solar Power Project in Manama

In a significant demonstration of international cooperation on climate action, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the German Embassy have officially inaugurated a new rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the embassy’s premises in Manama. The project was unveiled by Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak bin Daina, Minister of Oil and Environment, and Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan, Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, marking a pivotal step in Bahrain’s commitment to renewable energy and its national net-zero objectives.

A Model for Sustainable Diplomacy

This initiative, the first of its kind for a foreign embassy in Bahrain, directly supports the Kingdom’s strategic shift toward a green, post-carbon economy. During the inauguration ceremony, Minister Humaidan lauded the embassy’s proactive stance, highlighting it as a tangible contribution to Bahrain’s renewable energy targets and its commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The project is expected to reduce the embassy’s electricity costs by as much as 20% and decrease reliance on natural gas for power generation.

Bilateral Commitment to a Greener Future

German Ambassador Clemens Augustinus Hach expressed his gratitude for the Bahraini government’s support, framing the new solar power system as a symbolic yet meaningful contribution to the global fight against climate change. He noted Germany’s own extensive history in championing renewables, which now constitute about one-third of its electricity production, with solar alone accounting for 12.2% in 2023. This collaboration underscores a shared vision for sustainable development and environmental stewardship between the two nations.

The embassy’s investment in clean energy, which complements its use of an electric vehicle for transportation, sets a powerful precedent for other institutions and diplomatic missions in the Kingdom. By fostering such international partnerships, Bahrain reinforces its strategy to build a diversified, sustainable economy while actively protecting its natural resources for future generations. This pioneering project serves as a clear indicator of the Kingdom’s progressive path toward achieving carbon neutrality and fostering sustainable growth.
