Impressive Bangladesh rickshaw batteries get unique 2024 upgrade
A landmark collaboration between two Earthshot Prize laureates, SOLshare and GRST, is poised to overhaul the energy source for Bangladesh’s massive fleet of electric rickshaws. This strategic alliance aims to tackle a pervasive environmental issue by retrofitting five million vehicles, replacing their hazardous lead-acid batteries with a groundbreaking, sustainable alternative.
Electric rickshaws are an indispensable feature of urban life and a critical source of income for millions in Bangladesh. However, this transport revolution has been powered by a problematic technology. Conventional lead-acid batteries are a significant source of pollution, containing toxic “forever chemicals” that contaminate soil and water upon disposal. Beyond the environmental damage, their short lifespan and inefficiency place a constant economic strain on the drivers who rely on them for their livelihood.
This new initiative combines cutting-edge technology with a robust implementation network. GRST, a 2023 Earthshot Prize winner, contributes its pioneering water-recyclable lithium-ion batteries, which completely eliminate the toxic elements of their predecessors. Complementing this innovation is SOLshare, a 2021 Earthshot finalist, which leverages its extensive payment and monitoring infrastructure across Bangladesh. SOLshare’s established presence will manage the financing, distribution, and performance tracking, ensuring a smooth and accessible transition for the drivers.
The positive impacts of this upgrade are both significant and measurable. Citing figures from The Earthshot Prize, the project is set to deliver substantial gains. Each swap from a lead-acid unit to a GRST battery is projected to cut carbon emissions by 2.5 tonnes. Furthermore, the initiative is engineered to boost the daily income of rickshaw drivers through enhanced battery efficiency and longevity, all while preventing harmful chemicals from polluting local ecosystems.
Ultimately, the partnership between SOLshare and GRST represents more than a simple hardware exchange. It is forging a new, sustainable ecosystem for clean urban mobility in Bangladesh. This project serves as a powerful model for how collaborative innovation can address pressing environmental challenges while fostering economic empowerment and creating a healthier future for communities.
