Laghman solar project Launches 10-Megawatt Power for Incredible Change

In a significant move towards energy self-reliance, Afghanistan has initiated work on a new 10-megawatt solar power facility in the eastern Laghman province. The project was officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on May 22, 2025, signaling a strategic push to harness the nation’s clean energy potential and lessen its reliance on imported electricity.

This pivotal infrastructure project is driven by private sector investment, with the Regal Group committing $6 million to its development. The construction timeline is notably ambitious, with officials projecting completion within just six months of the inauguration. Once operational, the solar plant is expected to deliver a stable power supply to approximately 10,000 families throughout the province, addressing chronic energy shortages and fostering regional economic growth.

During the launch ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Baradar highlighted the project’s importance in the broader context of Afghanistan’s national development. By generating power locally, the initiative represents a crucial step in the country’s strategy to achieve energy independence. Afghanistan has historically been heavily dependent on electricity imported from neighboring countries, a situation this and similar projects aim to rectify.

The Laghman solar facility is a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio. By leveraging abundant solar resources, the nation is working to build a more resilient and sustainable power grid. This project not only promises to illuminate thousands of homes but also serves as a model for future private-public partnerships in Afghanistan’s burgeoning green energy sector.
