Mirpur Launches Solar Electric Cart Project for Affordable Travel

In a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility, the District Administration of Mirpur, AJK, officially launched a pioneering inter-city solar electric cart service on June 26, 2024. This pilot initiative, the first of its kind in the region, introduces a fleet of pollution-free vehicles aimed at providing residents with an economical and environmentally conscious transportation alternative.

The project’s initial phase targets one of the city’s most congested corridors, establishing a route from Kalayal Chowk to Thothal. This path serves the densely populated heart of Mirpur, connecting key locations including Naangi Chowk and Shaheed Chowk. To ensure accessibility for all residents, the fare has been set at an affordable Rs. 30 per passenger, per stop, offering a welcome relief from fluctuating petrol prices.

These innovative solar-powered carts are designed to address the city’s limited public transport infrastructure while promoting a cleaner environment. The inauguration ceremony, held at Shaheed Chowk, was attended by city officials who lauded the project as a critical development for the community.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

Deputy Commissioner Yasir Riaz highlighted the project’s strategic importance, stating, “This project is crucial for our community. It offers an affordable alternative to high petrol costs and is just the beginning of expanding this service to other areas of Mirpur.” The administration’s vision extends beyond this initial route, with concrete plans to scale the service to cover more residential neighborhoods across the city.

The initiative’s success hinges on its dual benefits: economic relief for commuters and a significant reduction in carbon emissions. By harnessing solar energy, Mirpur is actively contributing to Pakistan’s national sustainability goals. Furthermore, collaboration with the private sector has been instrumental in keeping operational costs and passenger fares low, making it a viable long-term solution.

Community Impact and Expansion

The introduction of the solar electric cart service has been met with enthusiasm from the local community, which has long sought reliable and cost-effective transit options. The project is expected to not only ease traffic congestion but also stimulate local economies by increasing foot traffic and creating employment opportunities.

As a pilot program, its performance will be closely monitored to inform future expansion. The successful implementation in Mirpur could serve as a replicable model for other cities in Pakistan grappling with similar challenges of urbanization and pollution. By prioritizing renewable energy in public transport, Mirpur is positioning itself as a leader in green urban development, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
