Tenaris Solar Park Romania: 20 MW Solar Park Launch in Călărași

Tenaris, a global leader in steel pipe manufacturing, has officially inaugurated a major renewable energy project at its seamless pipe mill in Călărași, Romania. In April 2025, the company launched a 20 MW solar park, now recognized as the largest self-consumption photovoltaic farm in the country, designed to supply clean energy directly to its industrial operations.

The new solar facility, constructed over two years on a 24-hectare plot of Tenaris-owned land, represents a significant step in the company’s sustainability efforts. The project is engineered to achieve a peak capacity of 20 MW, with an average output of approximately 5 MW under optimal conditions. This clean power generation is expected to reduce the steel mill’s carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 19,000 tons annually.

A Strategic Investment in Decarbonization

The development of the Călărași solar park involved a total investment of $21.5 million. This was financed through a public-private partnership, with Tenaris covering 70% of the cost. The remaining 30% was funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, specifically under its Green Transition component aimed at supporting solar and wind projects. The extensive two-year process included navigating EU bidding procedures, complex grid integration, and thorough testing before the plant became fully operational.

This initiative is a key component of Tenaris’s broader corporate strategy to decrease its global greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. By integrating renewable energy into its power-intensive manufacturing processes, the company not only reduces its own carbon footprint but also supports the decarbonization goals of its customers by enabling the production of lower-carbon steel products.

Tenaris’s Global Footprint and Sustainable Future

As a leading manufacturer and supplier of steel pipes for the energy sector and other industrial applications, Tenaris operates a vast network of production, research, and service facilities across the globe. The company is publicly traded on several exchanges, including as TEN on the New York Stock Exchange, and as TENR on both the Mexican and Buenos Aires Stock Exchanges. The Călărași solar park underscores the company’s commitment to embedding sustainable practices within its global operations, setting a benchmark for the steel industry’s transition toward a greener future.
