Watson Lake Solar Initiative Secures $28.6 Million for Extraordinary Project
A landmark renewable energy project in Watson Lake, Yukon, has received a significant financial boost, with the federal government investing $28.6 million. The Sādę Solar Initiative, spearheaded by the Liard First Nation in partnership with First Kaska Utilities Ltd., is now set to become the largest Indigenous-led solar energy project north of the 60th parallel and the largest solar farm in the Yukon.
Project Specifications and Diesel Displacement
The ambitious project involves the construction of a 2.85-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic array complemented by a battery storage system. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to integrate directly into Watson Lake’s isolated microgrid. Officials project it will displace over 24% of the community’s current diesel-generated power, marking a substantial shift towards cleaner energy sources. The tangible environmental impact is estimated to be a reduction of approximately 1,020,300 litres in annual diesel consumption.
Community Vision and Generational Impact
Following a groundbreaking ceremony on June 17, 2025, community leaders emphasized the long-term vision behind the initiative. Jasper Lamouelle, CEO of First Kaska Utilities, noted that the project is a crucial step to “build generational resiliency” for the community. The initiative serves as a powerful model for Indigenous leadership in Canada’s energy transition, ensuring local communities are at the forefront of sustainable development and benefit directly from the economic and environmental opportunities it creates.
A Milestone for Canada’s North
The investment in the Sādę Solar Initiative is a pivotal moment for renewable energy development in Canada’s northern regions. By drastically reducing reliance on fossil fuels in a remote community, the project not only helps meet national climate targets but also demonstrates the viability and strategic importance of solar power in the North. This initiative paves the way for a more sustainable and energy-sovereign future for the Yukon and other northern territories.
