Gentari Renewables’ Maryvale Project features 172 MW Solar PV and 372 MWh Battery

Gentari Renewables Australia, a subsidiary of Malaysian state-owned energy company Petronas, has successfully secured a long-term energy service agreement (LTESA) for its Maryvale Solar and Energy Storage project. The development was one of only two projects selected in the fourth tender round under the New South Wales Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, a critical framework for the state’s shift away from coal-fired generation.

Project Specifications and Location for Gentari Renewables’ Maryvale Project features 172 MW Solar PV and 372 MWh Battery

Located near Wellington, approximately 37 kilometers southeast of Dubbo, the Maryvale facility is a significant hybrid renewable energy project. It will integrate a 243 MWp DC-coupled solar PV array, which will have a maximum export capacity of 172 MW into the National Electricity Market. Paired with the solar farm is a substantial 372 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), engineered to provide dispatchable green power for two to three hours, thereby enhancing grid stability. The project is scheduled to commence operations by 2028.

NSW Tender Success and Broader Goals

The tender, launched last November to procure 3,000 GWh of new generation capacity, also awarded an LTESA to Iberdrola’s 140 MW Flyers Creek Wind Farm. According to AEMO Services, the NSW Consumer Trustee overseeing the tenders, these projects represent important progress. “These two projects are valuable additions to an already robust pipeline of supported projects throughout NSW,” stated AEMO Services’ executive general manager, Nevenka Codevelle. She added, however, that achieving state targets will require “securing additional investments, potentially at or near record levels through 2030 and beyond.”

The success of the Maryvale project is a key step in NSW’s strategy to facilitate private investment for at least 12 GW of new renewable energy and 2 GW of long-duration storage. By providing developers like Gentari Renewables with LTESAs to de-risk investments, the state is accelerating the development of advanced facilities like this hybrid solar and storage system. This initiative supports NSW’s ambitious goals for a cleaner, more affordable, and reliable electricity supply for consumers.
