In a significant move to secure its energy future and advance its sustainability agenda, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has solidified a partnership with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to procure 200 MW of solar power. The agreement, which received final approval from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on November 21, 2025, locks in a stable energy supply for 25 years.
This strategic procurement is priced at a competitive tariff of ₹2.61/kWh, supplemented by a trading margin of ₹0.07/kWh. The power will be sourced from an Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected project, a key detail outlined in the agreement accepted by NDMC on March 4, 2024. This initiative is a cornerstone of the council’s strategy to meet its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) compliance and address electricity deficits, particularly during peak summer periods when demand in the New Delhi area can surge to 525 MW.
NDMC Partners with SECI for 200 MW Solar Power: A Green Mandate
The 200 MW deal is a critical component of NDMC’s ambitious vision to transition New Delhi into a municipality powered entirely by green energy by the 2025-2026 timeframe. By securing a large-scale supply of clean electricity, the council is laying the groundwork to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and significantly lower its carbon footprint.
This effort extends beyond large utility-scale projects. NDMC’s comprehensive environmental strategy also includes a goal to have rooftop solar power systems installed on every building within its jurisdiction by 2026. Together, these initiatives represent a robust, multi-pronged approach to achieving energy self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship, positioning New Delhi as a leader in urban sustainability.
Setting a Benchmark for Urban Renewable Energy
The successful collaboration between NDMC and SECI serves as a powerful model for other urban bodies across India. It demonstrates how municipalities can leverage strategic partnerships to secure cost-effective, long-term renewable energy contracts that ensure grid stability and promote environmental goals. As the project heads towards its expected commissioning in November 2025, it marks a tangible milestone in the capital’s journey toward a cleaner and more resilient energy infrastructure, setting a new standard for sustainable urban development in the nation.
