Unilever Costa Rica, part of the multinational corporation known for its food, personal hygiene, and cleaning products, is set to install a 1.36 MW solar system at its Belén plant in Heredia.

Unilever Costa Rica Implements Major Solar Project at Belén Plant

Unilever Costa Rica is undertaking a significant renewable energy initiative by installing a 1.36 MW solar system at its Belén plant in Heredia. This ambitious project will cover 6,100 square meters with solar panels on both rooftops and ground surfaces, making it one of the largest solar energy projects in Costa Rica to date.

The initiative is supported by Enertiva and implemented through a comprehensive energy services agreement with local distributor Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL), representing a major step forward in the use of sustainable energy.

Unilever Costa Rica Aims for Emission-Free Renewable Energy

By harnessing solar power, Unilever Costa Rica is bolstering its sustainability efforts and reducing its carbon footprint—a move that aligns with the country’s commitment to green energy.

The project also reflects Unilever’s broader global strategy of integrating renewable energy into its operations to advance both environmental goals and operational efficiency.

Luis González, Manager of the Unilever Costa Rica Nutrition Factory, highlighted that the goal is to achieve emission-free production processes with a fully renewable energy supply, which would make the Belén plant the first of its kind in Unilever’s global network.

Advancing Sustainable Energy Through Partnership

Alejandro Brenes, Manager of Enertiva, praised the project as a successful public-private partnership, highlighting the collaboration between Unilever, CNFL, and Enertiva as a model for innovation that fosters environmental sustainability, job creation, and economic development.

Enertiva, a Central American company founded in 2007, specializes in renewable energy solutions with a particular focus on the solar power sector. It has since become a significant player in the region’s renewable energy market, focusing on solar systems, solar thermal systems, and energy efficiency projects.
