Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has issued a call for bids for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 15-megawatt peak (MWp) solar PV system with 22 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage for the isolated Linden system.
Guyana Deploys Solar Projects with Norway Funds
Financing for this initiative comes from the $220.8 million Guyana received for forest climate services through its partnership with Norway. The funding covers an 8 MWp solar system with 12 MWh of battery storage for the isolated Essequibo coast and a 10 MWp solar system for the interconnected Demerara-Berbice network in Berbice.

At a press conference, President Irfaan Ali announced that the procurement process for the utility-scale solar project in Linden, Guyana, is progressing.
The project is part of a larger $83.3 million initiative under the Guyana Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL), which aims to enhance clean energy nationwide.
“Contracts for Berbice and Essequibo are already secured, and the procurement process for Linden is progressing,” Ali stated.
$38M Solar Project to Boost Guyana’s Energy
In March, contracts valued at $38 million were signed for an 18 MWp solar PV system to enhance sustainable energy infrastructure in Regions Two, Five, and Six.
The 18-month project is being executed by a joint venture between SUMEC Complete Equipment and Engineering Company Limited and XJ Group Corporation.
Additionally, $850,000 was allocated for training women and people with disabilities in solar installation, further promoting social and economic development.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which manages the funds, noted that these solar projects will significantly reduce CO2 emissions, decrease electricity costs, and aid Guyana’s shift to renewable energy sources.
“These projects will provide affordable and clean energy to areas such as Linden and Berbice,” said Ali.
Guyana’s Solar Initiative to Benefit 70,000 People
The initiative is projected to provide affordable and clean energy to 27,000 households, benefiting over 70,000 people.
In a few years, Guyana will have 14 solar farms and 28 solar mini-grids with a total installed capacity of 39 megawatts (MW).
Through these new solar PV systems, Guyana is making significant strides in its renewable energy sector. The projects underscore the nation’s commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources and improving energy access and sustainability nationwide.
