British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya has announced a monumental 54 percent reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions for 2023, a significant stride in its environmental stewardship goals. This achievement, detailed in the company’s latest Sustainability Report, not only demonstrates a firm commitment to combating climate change but also places the company seven years ahead of its 2030 decarbonization target.
BAT Kenya Achieves 54 Percent Emissions Cut Through Solar Investment
The cornerstone of this environmental success is a targeted strategic financial commitment to renewable energy. Between 2021 and 2022, BAT Kenya invested Sh145 million into developing its on-site solar energy infrastructure. This deployment resulted in the generation of 1,400 kilowatt peak (kWp) of clean electricity, directly powering its facilities and drastically reducing its reliance on the grid and fossil fuels.

Crispin Achola, the Managing Director of BAT Kenya, highlighted the proactive nature of their strategy. “As part of efforts to combat climate change and drive excellence in environmental management, BAT Kenya saw a 54 percent reduction in its scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2023, seven years ahead of its 2030 target to reduce these emissions by 50 percent,” he stated. This early achievement underscores the effectiveness of the company’s focused decarbonization plan.
Beyond Emissions: A Holistic Approach to Sustainability at BAT Kenya
BAT Kenya’s sustainability efforts extend well beyond its carbon footprint. The 2023 report also celebrates a remarkable 62.5 percent reduction in water withdrawal from its operations, substantially surpassing its 2025 goal of a 35 percent cut. This highlights a deep commitment to conserving vital natural resources.
The company has also made significant strides in social governance, particularly in diversity and inclusion. Women now hold 47 percent of senior leadership positions, exceeding the 2025 target of 45 percent. This focus on equity is further reflected in increased base salaries for female employees across various job levels.
“The achievement of multiple sustainability targets ahead of set timelines is a testament to our commitment to creating shared value for our stakeholders,” Achola commented. “I am especially proud of our performance in the areas of diversity, inclusion and equity, socio-economic development, and climate change.” By integrating environmental goals with social progress, BAT Kenya is setting a new benchmark for corporate responsibility in the region.
