BAT Kenya Achieves 54 Percent Emissions Cut Through Solar

BAT Kenya reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 54 percent in the past year, thanks to a Sh145 million investment in solar energy. The achievement underscores the company’s commitment to combating climate change and reducing its carbon footprint.

Emissions Cut: Result of Significant Investment in Solar Energy

In its 2023 Sustainability Report, British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya announced it had cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by a significant 54 percent in the past year. This progress, part of a broader BAT sustainability strategy to combat climate change, highlights the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

This reduction was driven by a substantial investment in solar energy. Between 2021 and 2022, the company invested Sh145 million in solar infrastructure, generating 1,400 kilowatt peak (KwP) of electricity at its onsite facilities.

BAT Kenya’s solar investment cut greenhouse gas emissions by 54%, highlighting their commitment to sustainability.

Crispin Achola, Managing Director of BAT Kenya, attributed the reduction to the company’s decarbonization strategy. He stated, “As part of efforts to combat climate change and drive excellence in environmental management, BAT Kenya saw a 54 percent reduction in its scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2023, seven years ahead of its 2030 target to reduce these emissions by 50 percent.” This accomplishment underscores BAT Kenya’s proactive approach, having exceeded its emission reduction target well ahead of schedule.

Broader Sustainability Achievements

Beyond reducing its emissions, BAT Kenya has made notable progress in other areas of sustainability. The company reported a 62.5 percent reduction in water withdrawal, far surpassing its 2025 target of 35 percent. This significant decrease in water use makes its operations more sustainable and less impactful on the environment.

The company’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in its performance on gender diversity and pay equity. Women now represent 47 percent of senior leadership roles, exceeding the 2025 target of 45 percent. This commitment extends beyond senior leadership, as women across various job grades have also seen an increase in their base salaries.

Crispin Achola expressed pride in these achievements, stating, “The achievement of multiple sustainability targets ahead of set timelines is a testament to our commitment to creating shared value for our stakeholders. I am especially proud of our performance in the areas of diversity, inclusion and equity, socio-economic development, and climate change.”

Looking Ahead

BAT Kenya’s success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing other sustainability goals sets a strong example for other companies in the region. By investing in renewable energy and promoting diversity and inclusion, the company is not only reducing its environmental impact but also contributing to social and economic development.

The 2023 Sustainability Report highlights the effectiveness of the company’s strategies and the dedication of its leadership. With its continued focus on sustainability, BAT Kenya is well-positioned to reach even greater milestones in the coming years.
