In a significant development for the automotive solar sector, German supplier Webasto has unveiled its EcoPeak system, a sophisticated vehicle-integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) solution. The technology aims to generate up to 350 kWh of electricity per year, potentially extending an electric vehicle’s range by as much as 2,500 km annually, contingent on the vehicle type and regional climate.

The EcoPeak system’s core innovation lies in its unique construction, which seamlessly integrates solar panels into both the roof and rear window of a vehicle. It utilizes triangle-shaped silicon solar cells arranged in a distinctive honeycomb matrix to maximize the energy-generating surface area. Maximilian Hofbeck, Webasto’s director of product management and sustainability, noted the in-house effort behind the concept, stating, “The solar cell design and panel design were done internally by our R&D department. We also explored potential suppliers for a future hardware buildup of this concept.”
A key feature of the EcoPeak concept is its significant weight reduction. By using polycarbonate derived from biomass-balanced and recycled materials instead of conventional aluminum, Webasto has engineered a roof system that is up to 40% lighter. This commitment to sustainable materials, such as those produced with the biomass balance method developed by BASF, underscores the company’s focus on reducing the environmental footprint of its products without sacrificing durability.

Webasto’s design offers automotive manufacturers a high degree of flexibility. Clients can opt to cover the entire roof and rear window surface with photovoltaic cells for maximum energy yield or use fewer cells to create a stylish, semi-transparent effect that allows more natural light into the cabin. This adaptability allows carmakers to tailor the system to specific vehicle designs and customer preferences.
This new concept builds on Webasto’s established expertise in the field, previously demonstrated with the 300 W solar sunroof developed for the Fisker Ocean electric SUV. Jan Henning Mehlfeldt, a board member at Webasto, described that project as a highlight, saying, “The large openable solar roof from Webasto is a real eye-catcher and makes sustainability perceptible.”
