Germany Solar Expansion Surpasses Solar Capacity Goal
Germany’s installed photovoltaic capacity has surpassed 128 GWp as of August 2026, exceeding the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) target for 2026 ahead of schedule, according to the industry group BSW-Solar.
Germany Solar Expansion Recent Figures
The country added approximately 17.5 GW of new solar capacity in both 2024 and 2025, demonstrating significant growth momentum. To meet the 2030 target of 215 GW, Germany will need to install nearly 20 GW of solar capacity annually moving forward.
Germany Solar Expansion Future Targets
The EEG outlines intermediate targets of 172 GW by 2028 and 400 GW by 2040. Despite reaching the 2026 milestone early, industry experts caution that maintaining such a pace may become increasingly difficult, particularly if expansion efforts begin to slow.
Germany Solar Expansion Market Context
According to data, Germany’s renewable energy sources accounted for approximately 59 percent of the electricity fed into the grid in 2025. The government aims to increase this share to at least 80 percent by 2030.
Germany Solar Expansion Challenges Ahead
Industry watchers express concern over potential hurdles that may impact future growth, with some citing the necessity for robust policies and investments to foster sustained development in the solar sector.
