Bluestone National Park Installs 6,200 Solar Panels

In a significant move towards renewable energy, Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has officially launched a new 3.2-megawatt solar farm. The expansive 3-hectare (7.4-acre) site is now home to 6,200 state-of-the-art solar panels, which are set to generate approximately 3,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean electricity each year. This output is sufficient to power around one-third of the resort’s total needs, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of up to 1,200 homes.

The project is a cornerstone of the resort’s ambitious £30 million investment strategy, which prioritizes both expansion and environmental responsibility. The solar installation is projected to have a major positive impact, preventing an estimated 675 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere annually. To put this in perspective, this reduction is comparable to removing 329 diesel vehicles from the road for an entire year.

Designed with a 40-year lifespan, the solar farm represents a long-term commitment to sustainability and a crucial step in Bluestone’s journey toward achieving net-zero status by 2040. Marten Lewis, Bluestone’s director of sustainability, highlighted the project’s importance. “The solar farm is a key milestone in our work to reduce our carbon footprint,” he stated. “As we work hard to achieve net-zero status by 2040, the solar farm is crucial in ensuring that we are true to our ambitions in response to the nature and climate emergencies.”

Lewis also emphasized the successful fusion of tourism and environmental stewardship, noting, “Our main aim is to successfully balance tourism with sustainability.” The project, which was approved over 18 months ago, is now fully operational and contributing to the resort’s energy needs.

This large-scale solar project, powered by thousands of individual solar cells, does not stand alone. It is part of a comprehensive suite of initiatives designed to shrink the resort’s overall carbon footprint. Other established green programs at Bluestone include using locally sourced biomass to heat its Blue Lagoon Water Park, a food waste recycling scheme, staff-commute bus services, and a fleet of onsite electric buggies for guest transportation. By integrating advanced technology with a steadfast commitment to the environment, Bluestone is reinforcing its position as a pioneer in sustainable tourism.
