PureSky Energy Launches 4.4 MWdc Cotuit Solar Farm in MA

PureSky Energy has launched the Cotuit Solar Farm in Sandwich, Massachusetts, adding 4.4MWdc of clean energy and a 1.4MWdc battery storage system to the grid.

The farm’s 11,172 high-efficiency solar panels will generate 5,720,305 kWh annually, enough to power 783 households. This project will also cut carbon emissions by 8.81 million pounds each year—the equivalent of removing 951 cars from the road.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The Cotuit Solar Farm brings both clean energy and financial benefits to the local community. PureSky Energy generated a new revenue stream for the town by donating the land and leasing it back. In addition, a neighbouring municipality has agreed to buy community solar credits at a reduced rate, lowering electricity costs for residents.

The solar farm also strengthens the local energy grid. Its 1.4MWdc battery storage system ensures power is available during peak demand, reducing the risk of blackouts and improving reliability. The combination of solar power and storage makes the entire system more resilient.

Renewable Energy Growth in Massachusetts

PureSky Energy has been expanding its renewable energy projects across the country. Since entering the U.S. market in 2016, the company has grown its portfolio to 233MW of generation capacity. It now operates 44 sites, with more under construction. The Cotuit Solar Farm is not the only major project in the state; PureSky is also developing the Fort River Solar project in Amherst. This facility will have a capacity of 6.5MWdc and a 3.5MWh battery storage system.

Nicholas Topping, Vice President of Community Solar at PureSky Energy, stated: “Partnerships with municipalities are fundamental to advancing the renewable energy transition and increasing the resilience of the grid through battery energy storage solutions. The town demonstrated exceptional leadership in quickly recognizing the value of community solar as an innovative way to support local renewable energy development and bring the benefits of solar to their residents.”

The Future of Community Solar

Community solar projects make renewable energy more accessible, allowing homeowners and businesses to benefit without needing to install their own panels. Instead, they can subscribe to shared solar farms like Cotuit. This model provides cost savings and supports sustainability.

The Cotuit Solar Farm is a prime example of how renewable energy can drive innovation and community partnerships. As PureSky Energy continues to expand, its projects will play a key role in shaping a greener future. The success of this farm shows that clean energy is not just a vision for Massachusetts, but a present-day reality.
