A landmark 50MW solar farm, integrated with a 14.2MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), has officially commenced operations in Nusantara, Indonesia’s burgeoning new capital. This pioneering project is the result of a strategic partnership between Singapore’s Sembcorp, through its subsidiary PT Sembcorp Renewables Indonesia, and the state-owned PT PLN Nusantara Renewables, marking Sembcorp’s first utility-scale solar venture in the country.
Advanced Technology for a Green Capital
Spanning an 87-hectare site, the facility is engineered with cutting-edge technology to ensure a stable and reliable power supply. It features an array of 114,420 bifacial solar modules capable of capturing sunlight from both sides, alongside 126 lithium iron phosphate battery packs and smart transformer stations. This combination is projected to generate approximately 93 GWh of clean electricity annually, sufficient to meet the energy demand of the new capital city and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
A Milestone for Indonesia’s Energy Transition
The successful launch of the Nusantara solar plant represents a significant step forward in Indonesia’s national energy strategy. The project directly supports the vision for Nusantara as a sustainable, green metropolis and aligns with the nation’s ambitious goal of achieving 75GW of renewable energy capacity by 2040. “Sembcorp is pleased to partner with PLN in this project,” stated Jen Tan, head of renewables for Singapore and Indonesia at Sembcorp Industries. “Leveraging our experience, we will deploy advanced energy storage to pair with the latest solar technology in this landmark utility-scale project.”
Fostering Investment in Energy Storage
While solar power is central to Indonesia’s decarbonization efforts, the integration of energy storage is crucial for managing its intermittent nature. The Nusantara plant’s 14.2MWh BESS sets a powerful precedent, as large-scale battery deployment across the archipelago is still in its early stages. This project highlights a growing momentum, with various companies investing in the local energy storage supply chain, such as Rept Battero’s planned 8GWh gigafactory for lithium-ion batteries.
Powering a Sustainable Future
This collaboration between Sembcorp and PLN not only powers a new city but also reinforces Indonesia’s potential as a regional clean energy hub. Ambitious projects like this are vital for meeting domestic climate targets and for supporting the energy needs of neighbors like Singapore. As Nusantara develops, this solar-plus-storage facility will serve as a foundational piece of infrastructure, demonstrating a scalable model for sustainable urban development across Southeast Asia.
