Poland Announces Historic Renewable Energy Auction for July 2025
Poland has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking renewable energy auction scheduled for July 4, 2025, backed by a substantial budget of 13.5 billion zlotys (US$3.34 billion). The ambitious initiative is divided into 10 distinct categories targeting a wide array of renewable energy sources, aiming to secure 25.9 TWh of power over the next 15 years.
Auction to Feature Diverse Renewable Energy Mix
The auction will be divided into ten categories, each focusing on a specific renewable technology, including hybrid systems, hydropower, onshore and offshore wind, biomass, biogas, and solar energy. This strategic approach is designed to foster a balanced and diversified renewable energy mix, reducing the nation’s reliance on any single technology while enhancing overall energy security.
Within these categories, onshore wind and solar PV are set to receive the largest allocations. Onshore wind projects smaller than 1 MW have an allocation of 1.3 TWh for 0.46 billion zlotys, while those ranging from 1-50 MW are offered 10.4 TWh for 3.68 billion zlotys.
Similarly, solar PV projects under 1 MW are allotted 1.8 TWh with a budget of 0.65 billion zlotys, and those between 1-20 MW will receive 2.0 TWh with 0.70 billion zlotys. These allocations highlight the increasing significance of solar energy within Poland’s renewable energy framework. The auction also features categories for other sources like hydropower, biomass, and biogas to support a diverse energy portfolio and encourage the development of various renewable technologies.
Offshore Wind Development a Key Highlight
This auction marks a pivotal moment as Poland ventures into securing offshore wind capacity—a cornerstone of its renewable energy agenda. The offshore wind category is split into two subcategories by project size: one for projects up to 200 MW and another for those exceeding that capacity. The former targets 2.2 TWh with a budget of 0.77 billion zlotys, while the latter aims for 3.0 TWh with a budget of 1.05 billion zlotys.
The integration of offshore wind into this auction is a significant milestone for Poland, which has set ambitious targets to expand this capacity as part of its Energy Policy until 2040. By diversifying its renewable energy sources, Poland aims not only to bolster energy security but also to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
Reflecting a National Commitment to Clean Energy
These renewable energy auctions are integral to Poland’s strategy for increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The country’s energy policy for 2040 emphasizes developing renewable energy sources, with a particular focus on offshore wind and solar energy.
By launching this record-breaking auction, Poland is reaffirming its commitment to achieving its renewable energy objectives and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. The success of this auction will be vital for fulfilling the country’s renewable energy ambitions and contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
