POWERCHINA Advances 30MW La Trinidad Solar Project in El Salvador
POWERCHINA has been awarded a contract to construct the 30MW La Trinidad solar project in El Salvador, part of the broader 70MW San Miguel solar initiative. The plant will feature over 62,000 Longi solar modules mounted on single-axis trackers, enhancing efficiency by following the sunโs path. Once operational, the project is expected to generate 188,000 MWh of energy annually, powering more than 50,000 households.
Investment and Future Impact
The La Trinidad solar project represents a substantial $45 million investment in El Salvadorโs energy landscape. This funding will support the construction and execution of the solar plant, helping propel the country toward a more sustainable future. The project’s impact on the local economy and environment is expected to be significant. By supplying clean energy to thousands of households, the La Trinidad plant will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions. This shift to renewable energy aligns with El Salvadorโs goals to boost energy security and lower costs for consumers.
Expansion Plans for the San Miguel Initiative
The 30MW La Trinidad project is just the beginning of a more extensive solar initiative in San Miguel. A second phase will add another 40MW solar plant, bringing the initiative’s total capacity to 70MW. This expansion follows a successful tender process in 2020, when the Comisiรณn Ejecutiva Hidroelรฉctrica del Rรญo Lempa (CEL) awarded contracts to develop 131MW of solar capacity across the country. That tender has driven significant growth in El Salvadorโs renewable energy sector, with the San Miguel initiative being one of the largest projects to emerge from the process.
El Salvador’s Expanding Solar Energy Sector
El Salvador has been making significant progress in expanding its solar energy capacity. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the countryโs installed solar capacity reached 563 MW by the end of 2023โa major leap from just 21 MW in 2017. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to diversify the nation’s energy mix and reduce its dependence on imported fuels. By investing in solar and other renewables, El Salvador is moving toward greater energy independence while addressing environmental concerns.
