Guatemala renewable energy auction: 1.4 GW Essential Initiative by 2030

Guatemala renewable energy auction: A bold step toward sustainability and clean power

Guatemala is taking bold strides to enhance its renewable energy capacity by planning a 1.4 gigawatt (GW) renewable energy auction by 2030. This forward-thinking initiative is a cornerstone of the government’s comprehensive strategy aimed at boosting sustainability and significantly reducing carbon emissions.

The proposed auction is a part of Guatemala’s extensive plan to integrate a wide array of clean energy solutions, including solar, wind, and geothermal projects. With a clear vision for the future, Guatemala aims to add 1.6 GW of new renewable capacity by 2028. This includes 1 GW dedicated to solar and 400 megawatts (MW) to wind energy, marking a pivotal shift towards a greener energy matrix.

In a bid to sustain this momentum, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) is set to launch an additional auction in April 2025, with an ambitious goal of securing another 1 GW of renewable energy capacity. This strategic move is anticipated to accelerate the country’s journey towards energy independence and sustainability.

Guatemala’s commitment to renewable energy is further underscored by its past successes. In a previous auction, the country awarded contracts for 110 MW of solar capacity and 60 MW of hydropower, setting a precedent for future endeavors. These initiatives not only contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also enhance the country’s energy security and economic resilience.
