Borealis and ENGIE have entered into a significant agreement to develop Belgiumโs largest solar carport, a project poised to substantially boost the nation’s renewable energy output. Situated at Borealisโ Kallo site, this solar carport is expected to considerably impact sustainable energy generation.
The carport will incorporate approximately 14,500 solar panels, generating 10 GWh of electricity annually. This energy production equates to the consumption of 5,700 apartments, underscoring the project’s capacity to curtail carbon emissions and bolster Belgium’s energy transition.
Announced on October 22, 2024, the project forms part of Borealisโ broader strategy to amplify its installed renewable electricity capacity. Construction is slated to commence in early 2025, with completion anticipated by year-end. ENGIE, a global frontrunner in the energy transition, will oversee the construction, financing, and operation of the solar carport. ENGIE has previously reached a solar milestone in Belgium, marking 100 MW of solar power capacity, as noted by PVKnowhow.

Covering 48,000 square meters and providing covered parking for 1,500 vehicles, the solar carport will be the largest of its kind in Belgium. This innovative structure will generate renewable energy and provide practical benefits for the Borealis Kallo site. The covered parking area will shield vehicles from the elements, and the carport will feature 40 electric vehicle charging points, further encouraging sustainable transportation.
