The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) is financing the installation of a photovoltaic solar system in Honduras, which is expected to generate 9.2 GWh of clean energy annually. This initiative will support the development of sustainable infrastructure and promote the use of renewable energy in the region.
CABEI’s Investment in Honduras solar financing
CABEI’s commitment to Honduras extends beyond this single project. They are actively involved in strengthening the energy sector through various initiatives. For instance, CABEI approved financing of US$165 million to modernize Honduras’ electricity grid, aiming to improve service quality for over two million people. This complements their support, alongside the EU and the German government, for studies to implement the “Aguas Calientes” solar photovoltaic project, set to benefit over 35,000 Hondurans. Furthermore, CABEI and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are jointly promoting initiatives to develop the energy sector in Honduras, showcasing a collaborative approach to sustainable development.
This particular project, financed through the CAMBio II program, channels approximately US$498,942.68 via the Covelo Foundation to a micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) operating in the sustainable forestry sector. The goal is to install a grid-connected photovoltaic solar system that will not only generate clean energy but also reduce energy costs for the MSME, promoting sustainable practices within their operations.
Implications for Sustainable Development through Honduras solar financing
This initiative aligns with CABEI’s broader strategy of supporting MSMEs in adopting clean technologies and enhancing their resilience to climate change. The CAMBio II program, in partnership with the Green Climate Fund (GCF), focuses on sectors like sustainable energy, agribusiness, sustainable tourism, forest management, and responsible fishing, all crucial for fostering environmental resilience and economic development in its member countries. CABEI has also strengthened sustainable forest management in Honduras through the CAMBio II Program.

Relevance for Homeowners and Tenants in Germany: Honduras solar financing
While this project directly benefits Honduras, the underlying principles resonate globally, including in Germany. For German homeowners and tenants, this news highlights the increasing importance of renewable energy and sustainable practices. Germany, a leader in renewable energy adoption, can draw parallels with Honduras’ efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources. As Germany continues to invest in solar and other renewables, understanding international collaborations and financing models, like CABEI’s, offers valuable insights.
Furthermore, the focus on supporting MSMEs in Honduras mirrors the importance of “Mittelstand” (small and medium-sized enterprises) in the German economy. These businesses are crucial for innovation and economic growth, and supporting their transition to sustainable practices is vital.
By supporting projects like the photovoltaic solar system in Honduras, CABEI contributes to a global shift towards sustainable energy, a shift that resonates with Germany’s own energy transition goals. This also echoes previous projects where SUNEDISON, IFC, OFID and CABEI closed $146 million USD project financing to develop 81.7 megawatts of solar in Honduras.
