Malta Airport Announces On-Site Solar Farm as Part of Sustainability Drive

Malta International Airport (MIA) has taken a significant leap forward in its environmental commitments, announcing the completion of a new on-site solar farm. This major milestone is a cornerstone of the airport’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The newly installed solar farm is a powerful symbol of MIA’s dedication to clean energy. It is projected to generate approximately 5.1 million units of clean energy each year. Crucially, all the power produced will be consumed directly by the airport, contributing significantly to its operational energy needs and reducing its reliance on the national grid.

According to MIA CEO Alan Borg, this initiative not only supports the airport’s environmental goals but also enhances long-term cost efficiency. By generating its own clean energy, the airport is future-proofing its operations against fluctuating energy markets while actively lowering its carbon footprint.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Sustainability at Malta Airport solar farm

The solar farm is just one part of a much broader, multi-million-euro investment in sustainability. Malta International Airport has already committed €11 million to significant infrastructure upgrades designed to boost energy efficiency. These include the installation of modern heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and a transition to energy-saving LED lighting across the airfield, a project that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To address residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through direct action, MIA is investing in high-quality carbon credits. These combined efforts have earned the airport a prestigious Level 3+ status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, a certification that recognizes its achievement of carbon neutrality.

Investing in Growth and Green Initiatives, Including Malta Airport solar farm

This focus on sustainability is woven into the airport’s ambitious €345 million multi-year investment plan. Alongside its green initiatives, MIA is pressing ahead with significant infrastructure developments to enhance the passenger experience and accommodate future growth.

Key projects under this investment drive include a major terminal expansion, first announced in 2025. This project will add 6,000 square meters to the terminal, primarily to serve Schengen departures, and will also feature new retail and food and beverage outlets. The expanded section is slated to open in 2028. The investment plan also encompasses the development of SkyParks 2, further solidifying the airport’s role as a key economic hub.

By integrating large-scale renewable energy projects with strategic expansion, Malta International Airport is demonstrating that growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, setting a new standard for sustainable aviation.
